A Bedroom Makeover

Transitioning from college furniture to "adult" furniture takes time when you only have one income. I have taken my time and bought a dining room table first and just recently got new living room furniture. All that was left was new bedroom decor. This also happens to be the most expensive considering the expense of a mattress. I wasn't really in any rush to buy for this last room. Enter my brother, his new wife, and an extra (queen-size) bed they didn't need! I asked him if he was considering making a donation to the Candace-needs-a-nice-bed-fund, and as it turns out he was! He kindly gave me his practically brand-new bed and I am so thankful! As one can imagine, with a new bed comes new decorations! So, I searched the internet and found a bright, fun, yellow comforter that was half-off. Mix in a few more decorations and I now have a vibrant, new room! Thanks Chad for making this possible!!

A Little "Poem"

Unfortunately, here lately I have been inspired to write the following "poem."

Spiders, spiders, everywhere!
Spiders in the sink, spiders in the cabinet.
Spiders looking at me with beady, black eyes.

Spiders, spiders, everywhere!
Spiders on the floor, spiders on the door.
Spiders spinning webs that stick to my skin.

Spiders, spiders, everywhere!
Spiders above the bed, spiders on my head.
Spiders jumping and creepy crawling.

Spiders, spiders, everywhere!
Spiders on the wall, spiders in the hall.
Spiders dive bombing me in the breezeway.

Spiders, spiders, everywhere!
Spiders make me stressed, spiders I detest.
Spiders dying, dying, dying for I have no mercy on them.

Happy Father's Day!

I am so thankful for my Dad! He is a wonderful man who has worked really hard to provide for his family. When my brother and I were younger he taught him how to play baseball and he taught me how to find ladybugs and catch butterflies, ha! I still love butterflies to this day! Now that we are grown, he enjoys gardening and cooking. He plants butternut squash especially for me because he knows I love it so much. I really appreciate the ways he shows us he loves us. I know that he is there for me if I ever need him. Happy Father's Day, Daddy!

Today I Made a Dress!

One day a few weeks ago as I was playing on Pinterest, I came across this tutorial on how to make a 10 minute boxy dress.

I was immediately inspired and pinned it so I could make one myself! So this afternoon, I dusted off my sewing machine and tried my hand at this cute dress.  It was super easy and fun! I must admit, it definitely took me longer than ten minutes, but I love crafting and learning how to do new things. And the best part about this particular piece is it only cost $7 plus the thread! I had some extra material leftover, so I also made myself a headband that I can wear with a black shirt. So, if you like sewing, go ahead and give this dress a try!

The starting point!

The finished product! :)

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

Did you know that May is Better Hearing and Speech Month? Chances are that you probably didn’t. (Unless you are a SLP or an Au.D) And just in case you don’t know what those stand for: a SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist and  Au.D is an Audiologist. And as it turns out, I just so happen to be a SLP. Better Hearing and Speech Month is dedicated to raising awareness about communication/hearing disorders. Since it is May, I thought it would be fun to explain a little about my chosen career!
Speech-language pathologists, aka speech therapists, speech teachers, etc. are professionals who evaluate and treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders. They can work with individuals from all stages of life: birth-geriatrics.  Places of employment for SLPs include hospitals, nursing homes, schools, private practices, etc. As you can probably imagine, speech-language pathology is a very broad field! Here are some disorders that SLPs treat:

-         Articulation disorder: this occurs when a child substitutes one sound for another sound. Ex: wabbit for rabbit or tat for cat

-         Phonological disorder: this is an impairment in the rules of a sound system. Ex: omitting ending sounds in words

-         Fluency disorders: aka stuttering

-         Voice disorders: this occurs when there is an impairment in the volume, quality, resonance of the voice. Ex: sounding hoarse or like they are talking through the nose

-         Language disorders: impairment in learning language or loss of language skills due to trauma or illness

-         Swallowing disorders: because SLPs study the musculature of the speech mechanism (tongue, larynx-Adam’s apple) and those are the same muscles used in chewing and swallowing, they also treat swallowing disorders.

Speech-language pathologists may work with babies who have an impairment with swallowing which could be caused from a variety of reasons such as cleft palate, prematurity, or certain syndromes (ex. Down Syndrome). They work with children who have difficulty with any of the above communication disorders. They may also work with children who have communication disorders because of developmental delays, autism, syndromes, hearing loss, etc. They may work with adults who have traumatic brain injuries, strokes, degenerative illnesses (ex. Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, etc.), laryngectomies (having the Adam’s apple removed), etc. They may work with adults who speak different languages and have an accent on accent reduction and also with transgender adults who want to change their voice (completely unexpected, right?!) I’m going to stop here, but this list could go on and on!
So that explains a little about the field of speech-language pathology and communication disorders. I’m sure you don’t think about all of the aspects of your communication skills on a regular basis, but if you can communicate you are blessed! Muscles have to coordinate at just the right time and move to a very precise area every time you speak. And to have the ability to think and know what you want to say and how you want to say it! Don’t take this for granted. Use it to encourage those around you and to praise God!

“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Ephesians 4:29 NLT

“And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.” Colossians 3:17 The Message

A Day Among the Animals

One of the perks of working at a school is sometimes I get asked to go on field trips. Such was the case the other day when I was informed that I would be going to the zoo. I was excited because I would be getting a break from my typical work schedule and because I had not been to a zoo in a really long time. Like 15 years to be exact. I really enjoyed seeing all the different animals. Here are some pictures I snapped. Enjoy!

A Great Treasure

I am so thankful for my sweet Mama! She is a wonderful mother and friend. When I was younger, she always took care of me when I was sick, helped me with problems, encouraged me when I was down, taught me right from wrong and so much more! She still has a great impact on my life. I know she loves me and prays for me. I thank the Lord for giving me a Christian mother who loves Jesus. He is the reason she is a great woman and mother. Without her love, support, and guidance, I would not be who I am today. What greater treasure is there than a mother who leads and points her children to Jesus? So, thank you, Mama and Happy Mother’s Day!!! To God be the Glory!
